Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 2-2 draw with Sporting KC

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his Three Things We Learned from the Galaxy’s 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City.

LANDON DONOVAN GAMBLE ALREADY STARTING TO PAY OFF

That No. 26 for the LA Galaxy can still play soccer.

Just seconds after coming onto the field to chants of “AARP” from the Children’s Mercy Park crowd, Landon Donovan showed his detractors that he can still play. In his first shot since ending his retirement, the Galaxy legend scored the club’s equalizer in their 2-2 draw against Sporting Kansas City.

LA may not have gotten the win, but Donovan’s crucial goal is a real positive for the Galaxy and proof that bringing the MLS’ all-time leading scorer was a risk worth taking.

KEANE RETURNS BUT OFFENSE STRUGGLES TO HOLD ONTO THE BALL

Despite the return of captain Robbie Keane, the LA Galaxy showed that they are still a work in progress during their 2-2 against Sporting Kansas City.

Despite taking the lead in the seventh minute of play, the Galaxy were forced into a defensive shell for much of the match as Sporting KC dominated with over 60% possession. At times, the Galaxy were able to block Kansas City’s shots, but as has been the case many times this season, costly defensive lapses ultimately led to dropped points for LA.

As Los Angeles move into the final four matches of the season, the Galaxy must limit the number of defensive mistakes if they’re going to challenge for another MLS Cup.

THE BASH IS BACK: GORDO SHOWING HIS WORTH DOWN THE STRETCH

Just like he did in 2014, Alan Gordon is once again proving to be a clutch player for the LA Galaxy down the stretch.

The burly Galaxy striker notched his second goal in two matches in Sunday’s draw with Sporting Kansas City. Gordon’s finish was a perfect header from the striker who nodded a ball into the back of the net off an Ema Boateng cross.

The 34-year-old also provided the Galaxy with a valuable holdup presence throughout his 74-minute appearance as Los Angeles tried to overcome Sporting’s dominance in possession. As the Galaxy inch closer to the MLS Cup Playoffs, Gordon’s contributions in big games could prove vital.
