CARSON, Calif. -- On this day in 1996, the LA Galaxy faced off against D.C. United in the first-ever MLS Cup.

D.C. United defeated the Galaxy 3-2 in overtime in front of 34,643 fans on a rainy evening at Foxborough Stadium.

The match was a back-and-forth affair as the Galaxy took an early two-goal lead thanks to goals by Eduardo "El Tanque" Hurtado and Chris Armas, only to see United storm back. In the final 18 minutes, the Bruce Arena coached D.C. squad forced overtime with late goals from Tonny Sanneh and Shawn Medved.

Eddie Pope needed just four minutes of the extra period to score the winner and give United the first-ever MLS Cup trophy.

In honor of the anniversary, MLSsocceer.com will be hosting a Facebook Live stream of the match at 4 pm PT which you can follow along here.
