CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy are entering a new era and the two men tasked with leading the way are eager to write their own “chapter” in the club’s rich history.
The Galaxy have undergone a retooling since the appointment of general manager Pete Vagenas and general manager Curt Onalfo last month. Gone are mainstays like Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, and A.J. DeLaGarza, while both men state that reinforcements are “very close” to being announced.
Although the makeup of the team has changed, neither appear daunted by the challenge of replacing Bruce Arena.
“I’m fairly confident saying that regardless of who the individuals are, this club has massive expectations and they are relentless. The bar continues to rise,” Vagenas told LAGalaxy.com. “It's a challenge that we’ve lived through most of our professional lives and something that we look forward to. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Added Onalfo, “It’s a new time. We’re beginning our chapter. The post-Bruce chapter if you will, and we’re looking forward to it. It’s going to be a lot of hard work, but we’re going to build a great team. I’m the coach of the team, and I’m really excited about making our players better every day with the eye at the end of being the MLS Cup champions.”
The new era will officially begin later this month when Onalfo opens his first training camp as head coach of the Galaxy. Although some of the faces will be different, the new boss admits that “it’s time to get to work.”
“I wish preseason could start now,” Onalfo said. “The fun part is getting on the field and moving the group forward and creating the culture of success.”
