LOS ANGELES (Monday, May 23, 2022) – TheLA Galaxy continue their 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign by playing host to LAFC at Dignity Health Sports Park on Wednesday, May 25 (7:30 p.m. PT; ESPN+), before returning to league play to face off against Austin FC at Dignity Health Sports Park, in a match presented by Sherwin-Williams as part of Pride Night, on Sunday, May 29 (3:00 p.m. PT; UniMás, TUDN).
Dating back to their first U.S. Open Cup match in 1999, the LA Galaxy hold an all-time record of 34-17-1 in the competition and have been crowned champions twice (2001 and 2005). The Round of 16 match between the Galaxy and LAFC will mark the first-ever matchup of the two teams in U.S. Open Cup play and the 15th edition of El Tráfico across all competitions, with the Galaxy leading the all-time series 6-3-5. Notably, the Galaxy are unbeaten in seven all-time matches played (5-0-2) against LAFC at Dignity Health Sports Park. In the first meeting between the two teams during the 2022 campaign, Javier “Chicharito” Hernández and Séga Coulibaly both scored goals in the Galaxy’s 2-1 win over LAFC at Dignity Health Sports Park on April 9. Additionally, LA is unbeaten in four consecutive matches played (2-0-2) against LAFC dating back to May 8, 2021.
The Galaxy advanced to the Round of 16 with a 3-2 win on the road over NISA (National Independent Soccer Association) side California United Strikers FC in the Round of 32 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, Calif., on May 11. Dejan Joveljić registered a brace, including the game-winning goal, while Owen Lambe, on a short-term loan from LA Galaxy II, tallied his first career goal in his debut for the Galaxy.
Sunday’s MLS regular-season match between the Galaxy (6-5-2, 20 points) and Austin FC (7-3-3, 24 points) marks the fourth all-time regular-season meeting between LA and Austin, with the Galaxy leading the series 2-1-0. In the first meeting between the two clubs at Dignity Health Sports Park, the Galaxy earned a 2-0 win on May 15, 2021.The last time the Galaxy and Austin FC squared off, LA came away with a 1-0 shutout victory at Q2 Stadium on May 8, 2022.
The Galaxy will hold an in-person media availability following the conclusion of training on Tuesday, May 24. Training on May 24 begins at approximately 10:45 a.m. PT, with the first 15 minutes of the practice session open to media for b-roll and photos. Following the conclusion of the practice session, LA Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney and select players will be available to media at Dignity Health Sports Park Field #1.
