CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, January 12, 2011) – The LA Galaxy have three picks in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, which will be held on Thursday, January 13 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland. The three-round, 54-pick SuperDraft will begin at 9 a.m. (PT), with ESPN2 airing the first round of the draft live in its entirety. The second and third rounds of the SuperDraft will be streamed live on www.mlssoccer.com.
As a result of winning the Supporters’ Shield and reaching the Western Conference Championship in 2010, the Galaxy hold the 16th overall pick in the first round of the SuperDraft. The club also holds their natural selection in the second round of the SuperDraft and a pick that was acquired from Real Salt Lake in the third round of the SuperDraft. The complete list of Galaxy picks in Thursday’s SuperDraft can be found below.
#16 - Galaxy's Natural First Round Selection
#34 – Galaxy’s Natural Second Round Selection
# 50 – Pick Acquired from Real Salt Lake as part of a trade on January 14, 2010.
Pick was originally traded to the Galaxy on August 21, 2008 by Real Salt Lake in exchange for the MLS rights to Clint Mathis. The Galaxy then traded the pick back to Real Salt Lake on January 14, 2010 along with the #15 pick in the first round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, in exchange for the #16 pick in the first round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft and Clint Mathis. RSL then traded this pick back to the Galaxy later in the day in exchange for the Galaxy’s third round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft.
The Galaxy will then have two additional selections in the MLS Supplemental Draft, which will be held via conference call on Tuesday, January 18. The club holds their natural second and third round selections in the Supplemental Draft, giving them the 34th and 52nd overall picks in the Draft. The club traded their first round Supplemental Draft pick (16th overall) to D.C. United yesterday in exchange for forward Adam Cristman.
At the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, the Galaxy made just one selection, taking midfielder Michael Stephens from UCLA with the 16th pick of the first round. Stephens went on to appear in 25 regular season games for the Galaxy, scoring once and adding eight assists, which were the most of any rookie in the league.
The Galaxy will open the 2011 MLS season on Tuesday, March 15 when they head to Seattle to take on the Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field in MLS First Kick 2011, presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods. That game, which will kick off at 6:30 p.m., will be shown live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, as well as online at ESPN3.com. The Galaxy will then host the New England Revolution in their home opener at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 20 at The Home Depot Center.
