Israel Sesay, who made three league appearances for the Galaxy in 2007 and 2008, scored the only goal of the game for the Blues on Tuesday, setting up a meeting with his former club. He is one of four current Los Angeles players that have appeared in an MLS game for the Galaxy. He is joined by Mike Randolph, who made 39 appearances for the club between 2006 and 2008, Josh Tudela, who played 23 times from 2007-09 and Leonard Griffin, who appeared in one game for the club during the 2009 season. Griffin and Tudela were each suspended for Tuesday night’s win over the Fusion, but both will now be eligible to face the Galaxy next week.

The two-time Open Cup champion Galaxy advanced to the competition’s quarterfinals in 2010, defeating AC St. Louis of the USSF Division 2 Pro League last June at The Home Depot Center before falling to the eventual champion Seattle Sounders FC in the next round. The Galaxy have reached the Open Cup Quarterfinals eight times in the first 12 years that they have entered the competition. In that time, they have reached the semifinals five times and played in the U.S. Open Cup Final four times.

The Galaxy were crowned Open Cup champions in 2001 and 2005, defeating New England 2-1 on a golden goal in extra time at Titan Stadium in 2001 and knocking off FC Dallas at The Home Depot Center in 2005 behind Herculez Gomez’s club record sixth goal of the competition.

If the Galaxy advance past the Blues, they will qualify for the Open Cup Quarterfinals, where they will play an opponent that will be determined at a later date. That game would be played around Tuesday, July 12 at a yet to be determined location.
