The LA Galaxy U-18's remained undefeated on the season by beating the San Diego Surf, 4-0, Saturday at the San Diego Polo Club. With goals from Abel Leon and Sebastian Velasquez and Pedro Velasquez, no relation, the Galaxy improved to 4-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the Western Conference SoCal Division.
Sebastian Velasquez started the scoring for the Galaxy, notching his first goal of the year, in the 22nd minute. It was a great shot by Velazquez, which ricocheted off the right post and into the net. The goal gave the Galaxy momentum and got them rolling.
Two minutes later, the Galaxy got another opportunity when the Surf were whistled for a foul inside the penalty box. Pedro Velazquez took the penalty shot for the Galaxy, his attempt was blocked by the Surf keeper, but the ball came right back towards Velazquez, who took control and headed the rebound into the back of the net to give the Galaxy a 2-0 lead.
The Galaxy weren’t finished yet, though, and Abel Leon drilled in a deflected corner to put the team up 3-0 just before halftime.
It was plenty of enough scoring for the Galaxy defense, which notched their second shutout of the season.
“We moved the ball quickly and were dangerous when we had our chances,” said Assistant Coach Gordon Kljestan, who filled in for Head Coach Eddie Soto for the game.
Minutes into the second half, the Galaxy got another chance from the penalty spot when the Surf committed a handball inside the penalty box. Sebastian Velazquez stepped up to the penalty spot and capitalized on the opportunity, recording his second goal of the game and putting the game away at 4-0 in the 48th minute.
The win was a solid team effort, with all seven substitutes seeing action on the field.
Next up for the Galaxy is a bye week. In two weeks, the Galaxy host to Strikers FC U-18 on Saturday, October 29 to wrap up the month.
