NOTES:

  • With the loss, the Galaxy are now 6-9-2 on the season for 20 points. They now slip to sixth place in the Western Conference, two points behind Colorado, who beat Portland 3-0, for the fifth and final playoff berth in the conference.
  • The loss snapped LA’s three game winning streak and denied the club their first perfect month since September 2002.
  • This was the 50th all-time regular season meeting between the Galaxy and San Jose.
  • Prior to tonight’s game, the Galaxy had not allowed four goals in a game since a 4-1 loss at Real Salt Lake on March 26, 2011.
  • LA are now 0-2-0 on the season against San Jose. They last lost two games to the same team in a single season to Chicago in 2008.
  • Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made no changes to the team that beat Vancouver 3-0 at The Home Depot Center last weekend.
  • This was the first time since May 2011 that the Galaxy used the same lineup in consecutive MLS regular season games.
  • In addition to using the same starting XI, LA had the same seven players start on the bench as did in last weekend’s win over Vancouver.
  • LA were once again without eight players because of injuries. Andrew Boyens, Adam Cristman, Omar Gonzalez and Leonardo, who are all on the Disabled List with various injuries, while Edson Buddle and Dan Keat each recently had knee surgery. Pat Noonan, missed his fourth straight game with a right quad strain and Kyle Nakazawa missed his third straight game with back spasms.
  • The Galaxy fell behind 1-0 in the 7th minute when Steven Lenhart reacted first to the rebound of a Marvin Chavez shot  to score his sixth goal of the season.
  • That goal was Lenhart’s second goal in as many games against LA this season.
  • Both Galaxy-Earthquakes games this year have seen the home side take a 1-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes.
  • David Beckham equalized for LA in the 31st minute with his third goal of the season, curling a freekick past Jon Busch.
  • This was Beckham’s third goal of the season and his second directly from a freekick.
  • It was also the second goal of his career against San Jose and his first since April 2008 when he scored the first goal of his MLS career.
  • LA went in front five minutes later when Jason Hernandez deflected a Hector Jimenez cross into his net for an own goal.
  • That was the second own goal scored for LA this season, with Marvell Wynne putting a Mike Magee shot into his goal in Colorado on April 21.
  • This was the first time the Galaxy lost a game in which an own goal was scored for them since September 12, 2009 when Jair Benitez scored an own goal in a 6-3 FC Dallas win.
  • LA doubled their lead in the 41st minute when Landon Donovan scored his team-best sixth goal of the season and his fourth in the last three games.
  • That was Donovan’s first goal against San Jose since July 2010 when he scored a late equalizer in a 2-2 home draw. He had not scored in the Bay Area since a 3-2 loss on August 8, 2008.
  • Hector Jimenez was credited with the first assist of his MLS career on the goal. Jimenez now has one goal and one assist in his career with each coming this season against San Jose.
  • Mike Magee was also given an assist on the goal after intercepting an errant back pass from Jason Hernandez. That was his third assist of the season and second in the last three games.
  • Magee now has two goals and two assists in his last three games.
  • The Galaxy are now 1-3-0 when Magee has a goal or an assist against the Earthquakes compared to a 16-0-7 mark against all other teams.
  • This was the second straight game in which the Galaxy scored three times in the first half and the third straight game in which they scored three goals.
  • LA’s three goals in 10 minutes were their fastest three goals since scoring three times in nine minutes of the first half against FC Dallas on May 18, 2008. They won that game 5-1.
  • San Jose cut the lead to 3-2 late in the first half when Victor Bernardez volleyed a Marvin Chavez corner kick home for his first-ever goal in MLS.
  • The five goals in the first half were the most in any half of a Galaxy game this season.
  • Sam Cronin tied the score at 3-3 just after the break with his first goal of the season.
  • That goal came just two minutes into the second half.
  • Chris Wondolowski scored the eventual game-winner in the 61st minute, getting on the end of a Ramiro Corrales flick on. That was his MLS-best 14th goal of the season.
  • Marvin Chavez was also credited with an assist on that goal, giving him two in the game and three against the Galaxy this season.
  • All three of Chavez’s assists have helped to set up goals directly from corner kicks in their two games against LA this season.
  • The loss snapped Josh Saunders’ five-game winning streak dating back to April 14.
  • This was just the second time in his MLS career that he had conceded four goals in a game.
  • Sean Franklin once again played the full 90 minutes at right back. He has now played every minute in all 17 of his team’s regular season games.
  • Juninho picked up his fourth booking of the season midway through the first half. He now has four yellow cards on the season and is one caution away from a mandatory one-game ban.
  • David Junior Lopes was shown an 86th minute caution for his second yellow card of the year and first since April 21 at Colorado.
  • Beckham was also booked late in second half stoppage time and will now be suspended for his team’s next game, at home against Philadelphia on July 4.
  • The attendance for today’s game was a sellout crowd of 50,391 at Stanford Stadium.
  • This was the largest at the stadium since its 2006 renovation and the biggest for a non-doubleheader in Earthquakes history.
  • All eight of LA’s road games this year have been played in front of capacity crowds.
  • This was the Galaxy’s first-ever time playing in the historic Palo Alto stadium.
  • LA are now 16-16-7 in their first-ever game in a stadium, including a 2-1-0 mark in their first game at a stadium in the Bay Area.
  • The Galaxy will be back in action at The Home Depot Center on Wednesday, July 4 when the club hosts their annual fireworks extravaganza against the Philadelphia Union. That game, which is presented by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by one of the biggest fireworks displays in all of Southern California. KDOC and KWHY will show the game live in English and Spanish respectively.
