ON THE MATCH:

This year’s match promises to be more competitive than 2011. Chivas USA has a host of new talent looking to pull an upset. The starting lineup for the Galaxy features four rookies who will need to find their feet quickly to fill the void left by last year’s standouts Leppanen and Bryan Arguello, who departed at the beginning of the 2012 season. A lack of depth on the bench means that the entire squad will have to be prepared to go the distance, if necessary. A solid defensive crew, led by veterans Dan Cerwinske and keeper Jesus Lazcano, will have to hold tight as the creative midfield and lethal attack attempts to put the game out of reach. Cerwinske will expect partner Paolo Ferrari to use his stature as the tallest member in the squad to handle any airborne passes. The fullback positions will be held down by an all-female cast in Heather Pease, who is in her second year with the club, and the team’s newest addition Giselle Paletta. Central midfield pair Alex Kukich and Chris Klein should be able to do enough to control the game and create chances. Technically sound Steve Herman and the speedy Loza will parole the flanks and provide service for target man Berredo and strike partner Eugene Wu, the rookie out of UC Irvine. Off the bench, tireless Irishman Patrick Anderson will be able to maintain the fast pace of the game.

NOTES:

  • Rookies Ferrari, Paletta, Herman, Wu and Anderson will make their debuts for the Galaxy in tonight’s match.
  • Kukich will make his first ever start in the BarraClassic, after playing just the final 10 minutes in the 2011 edition.
  • At 6’4” Ferrari is the tallest member of the squad.
  • At 36 years and 134 days, Klein is the oldest member of the squad.
  • At 22 years and 272 days, Wu is the youngest member of the squad.
  • Berredo is the current leading goal-scorer in the rivalry, with three to his name.

LAST MEETING:
WATCH: 2011 BARRACLASICO RECAP

On paper, the 2011 edition of the LA Galaxy vs. Chivas USA BarraClasico was always going to be a one-sided affair. The star-studded Galaxy boasted such names as Casey “The Finnish Assassin” Leppanen and US International Chris Klein. The match lived up to expectations, despite seeing the home team waste early chances. However, once Leppanen slotted away the first goal, the floodgates had been opened. He followed up his effort with a second before Phillip Berredo got his name on the scoresheet. Ryan Loza’s perfectly placed volley from 18 yards out sent the Galaxy into the locker room with a 4 – 0 lead at halftime.

After the break, Chivas came out more aggressive. Galaxy substitute Sideshwar Patel was denied claims for a penalty after former teammate Gary Gomez pulled him down from behind inside the box. The visitors pressed a bit more and were able to pull two goals back before Berredo netted his second. The game was laid to rest after left winger Chris Zepeda’s pin-point cross found Berredo just outside the penalty area. The match MVP headed an audacious effort over the on-rushing keeper from 20 yards out to seal his hat-trick and close the scoring. After 90 hard-fought minutes, the Galaxy had prevailed with a final score of 6 – 2.
