CARSON, Calif. (Monday, August 13, 2012) – LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan has been selected as the MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters for Week 23 of the MLS season. Donovan assisted on all four of LA’s goals in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Chivas USA, becoming just the fourth player in league history, and the first for the Galaxy, to record four assists in a regular season game. The 30-year-old now leads MLS with 11 assists on the season and he is one goal away from recording 10 or more goals and assists in the same season for the first time since 2005.

HIGHLIGHTS: CHV vs LA

Donovan received 14 first place votes and one second place vote out of a possible 17 to win the award for the second time this season. This was the 14th time in Donovan’s MLS career that he has been selected as the Player of the Week with 12 of those coming as a member of the Galaxy.

His performance in Sunday’s game helped the Galaxy maintain their hold on the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, moving them 10 points clear of Chivas USA and FC Dallas, who are tied for sixth place. Additionally, the Galaxy, who are 11-11-3 on the season for 36 points, are now just one point behind both Seattle and Vancouver, who are tied for third place in the conference with 37 points each.

Following the game, Donovan traveled to Mexico City to join up with the U.S. National Team for their friendly against Mexico on Wednesday. As a result of his involvement in that game, Donovan will miss the Galaxy’s next game, on the road against the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night.

That game, which will be played at Crew Stadium, kicks off at 4 p.m. and can be seen live on the NBC Sports Network.
