CARSON, Calif. -- Unlike in years past, only one team will advance from the newly formatted CONCACAF Champions League group stage. A change that that midfielder Marcelo Sarvas believes requires the Galaxy to have a killer instinct, beginning with this Thursday's match against Isidro Metapán.
The Brazilian midfielder is keenly aware of the difficulties of the tournament's old format as last season, while playing for Costa Rica's Alajuelense, his club bounced from the first round of the tournament last season on goal difference despite tying the Galaxy and Mexican club Morelia on 12 points.
Following training on Tuesday, Sarvas admitted that the new CCL format leaves little room for error for clubs.
"I prefer the old format, not only for Mexican teams or American teams, but you have more chance for the other teams from Central America, but when it's only one team that goes through, you can not lose points, you have to be sharp with what you're doing. So I think that you have to be a killer because you know that you're not going to have a lot of chances."
