Stellar goalkeeping from Perk helps Galaxy earn a draw in Puerto Rico

BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico – Brian Perk was determined not to let the LA Galaxy leave Puerto Rico with at least a point from Wednesday’s match against the Puerto Rico Islanders. Mission accomplished.

Perk faced 15 shots on the night, making seven saves to preserve a scoreless draw for the Galaxy. The goalkeeper’s finest moments came late when he made a pair of saves in the game’s last ten minutes to prevent the Islanders from breaking through.

However, stopping the ball wasn’t the only facet of Perk’s game that excelled on Wednesday. Josh Saunders’ understudy was effective organizing the Galaxy back four and starting pushes up field with his clean passing.

Below are Perk’s thoughts from Puerto Rico…

(On the match result…)

Perk: “All in all, I think that we can be satisfied with the result. It’s always tough to play here and the guys gave a really good effort, but towards the end, it was a dogfight. We were battling back and forth and bringing on fresh legs up top on both sides so credit to both back lines, they kept zeros and it was a pretty fair assessment of the game.”

On his performance…

Perk: They had a couple chances on both ends, but both goalkeepers came out well so credit to both teams and both goalies. They did pretty well.”

(On his confidence..)

PERK: “It’s something that you can carry over to the next game whenever it is that I play, but it reaffirms what you already know so it’s always good. Sure, it’s a confidence booster, but there’s more games and this is just one.”

(Environment…)

PERK: “Puerto Rico is a nice place to come to, but playing a game is maybe not so enjoyable. Being a goalie, it’s not the worst, you’re not really that tired, but you have to be in there. You really have to give credit to the guys who played 90 minutes on the field tonight. They battled and it’s impressive stuff.”

(On the Islanders being more dangerous in this game…)

PERK: “They seemed more comfortable at home. It just seem like from the first whistle, they had a little more pep in their step. They came out and they took it to us at moments, we had our chances, and they had their chances so a 0-0 is a pretty fair result.”
