CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, September 5, 2013) – LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane has been selected as the MLS Player of the Month for the month of August by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). Keane scored five goals and added a pair of assists in four MLS games during the month, helping the Galaxy take 10 of a possible 12 points in August from a 3-0-1 record. Keane was voted the MLS Player of the Week twice during the month, doing so after recording a hat trick against Real Salt Lake on August 17 as well as after the 3-0 win over San Jose on August 31 when Keane scored twice and added an assist.

The 33-year-old Galaxy captain is the second Galaxy player to be named the league’s Player of the Month this season, joining former Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee, who was the MLS Player of the Month for March. This is the second time that Keane has been selected as the MLS Player of the Month since joining the club in August 2011, having previously won the award in July 2012.

Keane, who is currently with the Irish National Team ahead of their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Sweden and Austria, began the month by setting up a goal in his team’s 3-3 road draw with FC Dallas on August 11. Six days later, Keane spearheaded the Galaxy’s second half surge against Real Salt Lake as he scored three times to help LA overturn a 1-0 deficit and claim a 4-2 victory at StubHub Center. After being kept off the scoresheet in the 1-0 road win over Vancouver on August 24, Keane returned to a starring role last weekend, setting up LA’s opening goal before scoring on either side of halftime as the Galaxy beat San Jose 3-0 to maintain their hold on second place in the Western Conference.

The only player to rank in the top five in MLS in goals and assists this season, Keane leads the Galaxy with 12 goals and 10 assists in league play. The MLS leader in multi-goal games (4) and hat tricks (2), Keane is just the fifth player in Galaxy history and first since 2005 to register 10 or more goals and assists in the same season.

In addition to his sterling showing in MLS, Keane also scored both of LA’s goals in their 2-0 win over Cartagines in the CONCACAF Champions League to become the club’s all-time leading scorer in that competition while also scoring a goal and setting up another in the Galaxy’s memorable 3-1 win over Juventus at Dodger Stadium as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup.

The Galaxy, who will be playing without Keane, as well as Landon Donovan, Omar Gonzalez and Jaime Penedo because of international duty, will be back in action at home on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Colorado Rapids at StubHub Center. That match, which is presented by Time Warner Cable SportsNet, can be seen live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes.
