College Cup Update: Loyola Marymount eliminated on penalties by Stanford

The dreams of College Cup were extinguished for the Loyola Marymount Lions on Thursday as they were bounced from the NCAA Tournament by the Stanford Cardinal in a thrilling penalty kick shootout.

Former LA Galaxy Academy forward Christian Alvarado went 106 minutes during the match as Stanford advanced into the second round of the tournament by winning a penalty kick shootout three to two.

The victory by the Cardinal sets up a contest pitting the alma maters of multiple Galaxy players against one another as defender Todd Dunivant will take on Cal-State Northridge on Nov. 24 which produced LA defender Sean Franklin and midfielder Rafael Garcia.

Meanwhile, UCLA which boast multiple Galaxy Academy products will face Elon on Nov. 24 in Westwood while U.C. Santa Barbara and their two LA Academy alums host Penn State on Nov. 24.
