We know the schedule for the 2014 MLS regular season and now here are few musings on the schedule that was released earlier on Monday.
The countdown begins: Mark your calendars. The Galaxy will open up the season 108 days from now against Real Salt Lake on March 8 at StubHub Center.
Only one home game against San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA this year: LA will play twice away against three of their heated rivals in Seattle, San Jose and Chivas USA. LA’s first SuperClasico will take place on April 6 with Chivas hosting before LA host their lone match on June 8. The series will end on Aug. 31 with a Chivas home match. Meanwhile, LA take on San Jose for the first time on June 28 at Stanford Stadium. The Galaxy get their lone match against the Quakes at home on August 8 before the series ends with what may be LA’s final trip ever to Buck Shaw Stadium on Sept. 14. The Quakes expect to open up their new digs in 2015.
Two-week World Cup break: LA will not play a league game between June 9 and June 28 as the league undergoes a two-week break for the group stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Galaxy’s final match before the break will be their home-leg of the SuperClasico against Chivas USA on June 8 before returning to action on June 28 against the Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium.
LA’s Fourth of July streak continues: The LA Galaxy will extend the longest streak in American Professional Sports of games played on July 4 when they host the Portland Timbers at StubHub Center.
The LA Galaxy will be on national television 19 times this season: The premier television draw in MLS, the Galaxy will be on the league’s national television partners 19 times. LA will play eight games on NBC or NBC SN including six on ESPN, ESPN 2 or ESPN Deportes. The Galaxy will also play five games on Spanish only networks UniMas or Univision Deportes, but those games will be televised in English locally on TWC SportsNet.
The LA Galaxy will end the season with a home at home series against Seattle Sounders FC: LA will end the year with a pair of matches against Seattle as they host the Sounders in their final home game on Oct. before traveling to CenturyLink Field on Oct. – where they will end the year. If history means anything, both of these matches should have major playoff seeding implications.
