LA Galaxy II cruise into the U.S. Open Cup third round with a 6-1 win over Cal FC

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy II advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup in impressive fashion on Wednesday night when they defeated U.S. Adult Soccer Association club Cal FC 6-1 to advance in their U.S. Open Cup second round match at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.

Travis Bowen tallied a brace while Alejandro Covarrubias, Bradley Diallo and Jack McBean all found the back of the net. Forward Raymundo Reza tallied the lone goal for Cal FC.

With the victory, Galaxy II will now play PSA Elite in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on May 28 at StubHub Center's Track and Field Stadium at 7:30 PM PT.

Los Dos needed just six minutes to take the lead after Cal FC conceded a free kick on the edge of the box. Covarrubias, who attended nearby Cal-State Dominguez Hills, stepped up and smashed a strike past Cal FC goalkeeper Michael Abalos. The tally was the midfielder’s first professional goal.

In the 24th minute, Galaxy II doubled their lead when defender Bradley Diallo nodded a header past Abalos. Just five minutes later, Bowen scored his first of the evening when he forced a save from Abalos after an uncontested run up field. However, the rebound fell perfectly back in the path of Bowen, who slotted it into the empty net. Bowen would find the back of the net for a second and final time in the 33rd minute with a curling shot past the 'keeper.

The goal spree continued in the waning moments of the first half when Bradford Jamieson IV launched a shot on frame from long distance that was deflected home by McBean, who scored his first goal of 2014.

After a poor performance in the opening stanza, Cal FC showed considerable more mettle in the second half as they began to press Galaxy II in search of their first goal. Cal FC did eventually find the back of the net in the 60th minute when a Kramer Runager through-ball helped free a streaking Reza, who beat a diving Cody Laurendi for Cal FC’s lone goal of the evening.

Following the goal, Galaxy II began to control the run of play and rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute when Aleksandar Djokovic went on a great run and launched a shot that curled just inside the near post to seal the victory for Los Dos.

Galaxy II return to USL PRO play when they travel to take on Sacramento Republic at Hughes Stadium.
