CARSON, Calif. – New LA Galaxy goalkeeper Trey Mitchell was as surprised when the LA Galaxy called to bring him into the squad, but now that he’s a member of the squad, he’s hoping to make the most of his opportunity.
Mitchell was signed last Friday after the Galaxy lost third goalkeeper Brian Perk to a season ending surgery. He made his first appearance in the club’s game day roster as starting ‘keeper Brian Rowe’s backup during Saturday’s match with D.C. United.
The move came out of the blue for Mitchell who spent time earlier this year with USL side Louisville City FC before being released from training camp. Now that he’s a member of the team, Mitchell says he’s blessed to have the opportunity to play for the best team in MLS.
“It’s awesome. I’m truly blessed to have this chance,” Mitchell told LA Galaxy Insider. “I’m just absolutely stoked and to begin my professional career with the LA Galaxy is a dream come true. To be in my hometown, near my college is just awesome.”
A former trialist with Real Salt Lake and member of the now defunct Chivas USA Under-23’s, Mitchell enjoyed two standout years with Cal State Dominguez Hills. During his time with the Toros, Mitchell made 20 appearances while notching 71 saves and 0.85 goals against average which was the fourth best in the school’s history.
Due to the play of goalkeepers Jaime Penedo and Brian Rowe, first team minutes will likely come at a premium for the 23-year-old ‘keeper, but he’s optimistic that he’ll make a few appearances with Los Dos this season.
“It’s all dependent on how I perform in training. I basically start from an empty cup and now I have to fill up my cup. I know that I need to work my butt off and see where I can go from there. I think that if I play well in training then I can earn some minutes with Galaxy II, but my goal is to eventually earn minutes for the first team soon.”
