Santos Laguna start Liga MX campaign with 2-0 loss to Leon | INSIDER

Santos Laguna

Santos Laguna have plenty of high hopes for the 2016 Clausura season, but they started their campaign in poor straits.

The Guerreros dropped a 2-0 defeat to Club Leon on Saturday, finishing the match down to 10 men and without manager Luis Zubeldía. German Gano scored twice in the victory for Leon.

The match was a stalemate for the first half but picked up in intensity in the second stanza when Leon was awarded a penalty in the 54th minute that was saved by Santos goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín. Just four minutes later, Zubeldía was sent off by the official, causing the match to go south quickly for the Guerreros.

Leon broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Gano got through the defense and scored from close range. He completed his brace just two minutes later with a remarkable chilena finish. Only four minutes later, Santos player José Abella was dismissed with his second yellow card of the evening.

Santos open their home schedule next Friday when they host Chiapas.
