When the U.S. National Team faces off against Cuba this weekend, they’ll do so without any members of the LA Galaxy, a rarity for the USMNT in recent history.
Dating back to 2011, current Galaxy players have appeared in a whopping 78 percent of U.S. matches dating back to the USMNT’s friendly against Chile at StubHub Center in January of that year. In total, members of the five-time MLS Cup champions have played in 81 of 104 matches over the last five years.
Seven Galaxy players account for those 81 matches: Landon Donovan, Gyasi Zardes, Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza, Sean Franklin, Alan Gordon, and Edson Buddle. In that time, Zardes leads the way with 31 caps which just edges out Donovan’s 29 appearances for the USMNT.
