CARSON, Calif. – Former LA Galaxy midfielder Steven Gerrard entered a new phase of his career on Friday when he was appointed an Academy coach with his hometown club Liverpool FC.

Gerrard, who announced his retirement late last year, after an 18-year professional career that included stops at just two clubs, Liverpool FC and the LA Galaxy. The 36-year-old will work under Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe and is expected to have a wide-ranging role in the club’s youth setup.

“It feels like completing the circle; returning to the place where professionally it all began. However, this isn’t a decision based on emotion – it’s about what I can offer and contribute to Liverpool,” Gerrard said in a release. “I don’t think I need to explain to people what this football club means to me but when I knew coming back was a serious option I wanted to make sure it was a substantive role and a role in which I could really help the organization.”
