CARSON, Calif. -- Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl is reporting that the LA Galaxy have offered a contract to Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic that could see the Swede become the highest paid player in league history.

The 35-year-old striker has enjoyed a stellar season for United, scoring 26 goals in all competitions including the winning goals in the Community Shield and League Cup final. Ibrahimovic's contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be available to join the club via a free transfer in the summer.

According to Wahl, United is interested in retaining the striker, but the reporter's sources say that the Galaxy have a "realistic shot" at landing the forward. The Galaxy presently have three Designated Players in Giovani dos Santos, Romain Alessandrini, and Jelle Van Damme, but the club could potentially pay down Van Damme's charge in order to open up a spot in the summer window
