Girls’ LA Galaxy Academy takes on training session and sustainability challenge with adidas

The Girls' LA Galaxy Academy is going green this week.

On Sunday, the Academy partnered with adidas for a training session at RAT Beach in Palos Verdes. After completing a beach workout and practice, all levels of the Girls’ LA Galaxy Academy wrapped up the day with a talk about the state of the Oceans, marine plastic pollution and the importance of reducing single use plastic in our everyday lives.

This activation was part of the education and communication efforts from adidas, Parley for the Oceans and Major League Soccer in the run up to this Earth Day weekend's celebrations.

The team discussed Parley for the Ocean’s A.I.R. strategy to end plastic pollution, which stands for Avoid plastic wherever possible, Intercept plastic waste, and Redesign your life, and were presented with The Intercept Plastic Challenge. This experience will challenge the LA Galaxy Academy to collect as much plastic for local recycling centers as possible.

The adidas partnership with Parley for the Oceans aims to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans while collaborating on projects that can end their destruction, such as the creation of innovative products and the integration of materials made from Parley Ocean Plastic™ into their products. This weekend, the LA Galaxy will don jerseys made using Parley Ocean Plastic™ for their match against Atlanta United FC on Saturday at StubHub Center.

“At LA Galaxy, one of our core values is the desire to make a difference. From single use water bottles to plastic straws, there are decisions that the players are making every day that we hope we can steer towards being more environmentally friendly,” said Girls’ LA Galaxy Academy Director Kevin Hartman. “The collaboration between adidas and Parley for the Oceans is just one effort that is being made to offer an alternative to the status quo, but it provided us with an opportunity to reinforce how even the smallest decisions can impact the earth in a major way.”

With Earth Day approaching, MLS WORKS is hosting the third annual Greener Goals Week of Service from April 16-20. The Girls’ LA Galaxy Academy beach training session was a part of league-wide efforts conducted on and off the field to highlight Major League Soccer’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with MLS club and staff members volunteering their time with local charitable organizations and other green initiatives.
