The goalkeeper position was a source of stability for an otherwise tumultuous LA Galaxy II defense in 2018 as two familiar faces were consistently found in net for Los Dos.
Leading the way, in his first season as the starting goalkeeper for Los Dos,Justin Vom Steeg made a career-high 14 appearances across all competitions for the Galaxy, earning a 5-6-3 record. With 42 saves, Vom Steeg finished 17th in total saves in the USL Western Conference. Vom Steeg kept a 2.14 goals against average during 2018.
Vom Steeg also showcased an ability to make the big stop when called upon with many impressive saves, including one such performance against Las Vegas Lights FC which earned him USL Team of the Week recognition. His showing against Las Vegas may have been the goalkeeper’s finest moment of the season as Vom Steeg recorded a professional best eight saves in the contest, including a 90th-minute penalty kick save to secure the 2-1 victory for Los Dos.
Vom Steeg split his time in net with Eric Lopez, who played his fourth season with LA Galaxy II after a successful Academy career with the club. The 19-year-old made 11 appearances for Los Dos, earning a 2-8-1 record. Lopez averaged almost four saves per game but kept a 2.45 goals against average during the season. One of his biggest moments of the season came against San Antonio FC when Lopez made his first penalty kick save of the season. Lopez read the penalty kick beautifully to come up with a massive save for Los Dos. He finished 18th in total saves in the USL Western Conference.
LA Galaxy II newcomer, Wade Hamilton, also found minutes in goal during 2018 with six starts, earning a 1-3-2 record. Hamilton recorded the most clean sheets of any Los Dos goalkeeper in 2018, and secured the team’s first shutout of the season and the first shutout win of the season. The latter earned Hamilton USL Team of the Week recognition due to his season-high six-save effort. Hamilton ended the season with a 1.50 goals against average record.
