The Times reports that the 26-year-old midfielder’s contract will last through the 2019 season, and pay him less than $6 million annually. Formerly of Spanish side Villarreal, the Mexican international has played across Europe with stops at FC Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Galatasaray among others.
“It’s going to be a challenge for him,” Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena told the Times. “He’s not been at a club yet where he’s had those kind of responsibilities. And he’s in a community where he’s going to be sought after. He’s going to have to be mature about it.”
The Mexican international is currently with El Tri for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and according to the LA Times, he may make his debut as soon as the Galaxy’s Aug. 9 fixture with Seattle Sounders FC at StubHub Center.
