CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy may have suffered one of their worst defeats ever at StubHub Center, but the defending MLS Cup champions remain very much alive for the Western Conference’s second seed in the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Galaxy could have basically locked up the second seed with a victory over the Portland Timbers last week, but their 5-2 defeat threw their seeding into question for another week.  Heading into the final game of the regular season on Sunday against Sporting Kansas City, the Galaxy can finish anywhere from second to sixth in the final Western Conference standings.

Finishing in the Knockout Round is in a nonstarter for the Galaxy, however, as the club are hopeful of bypassing the round and starting the postseason in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Below are the Galaxy’s scenarios for clinching the second seed in the West:

If the LA Galaxy defeat Sporting Kansas City…

The Galaxy clinch second place in the Western Conference regardless of any other results.

If the LA Galaxy draw Sporting Kansas City…

The Galaxy clinch the second place in the Western Conference if the Portland Timbers lose or draw vs. the Colorado Rapids, AND Vancouver Whitecaps FC lose or draw vs. the Houston Dynamo.

If the LA Galaxy lose to Sporting Kansas City…

However, if the Galaxy were to lose, they'd need Sporting to drop their midweek game against the Colorado Rapids AND have the following results occur: Vancouver Whitecaps FC lose to the Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers lose or draw vs. the Colorado Rapids, and if Seattle Sounders FC lose or draw to Real Salt Lake.
