CARSON, Calif. – Steven Gerrard can’t wait to get started on the 2016 campaign.

The 35-year-old Galaxy midfielder was candid about the way that his first season with the club ended, and determined to succeed in what could be his final year as a professional. After being forced to learn a new league and a new culture on the fly last year, Gerrard believes that a full preseason will only help him and the Galaxy gel right out of the gate this season.

“I think it’s important for myself and everyone to get used to the style that we want to play for the season coming. There’s been a lot of change, and a lot of personnel have left, and a lot more are coming in,” Gerrard said. “For me, I’m a lot more settled now, and I’m aware of what is in store for the full season. When you turn up halfway through the season, then everything is new. I’m hoping to improve my personal performances.”

And that process starts on Saturday when the Galaxy start their preseason docket against former Armenian champion FC Shirak. Galaxy boss Bruce Arena told reporters earlier this week that he’s expecting to play two full groups during the match, but Gerrard is ready for however many minutes Arena offers him.

“At preseason training, the one thing that you look forward to is that first game. You want to get the minutes on the pitch and fitness. I’m sure [FC Shirak] will be a good test. Technically, they’re very good, and they’ll have a lot of supporters in the ground. It’s an exciting game, and we’re all looking forward to it.”
