Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 4-1 win over D.C. United

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides the “Three Things That We Learned” from the Galaxy’s 4-1 win over D.C. United in Sunday’s MLS regular season opener.

MIKE MAGEE CAN DO IT ALL

Mike Magee signaled his return to the LA Galaxy with two goals and an assist in Los Angeles’ comeback win over D.C. United.

Replacing Giovani dos Santos at the break, after the Mexican international picked up a left leg injury, Magee was an immediate threat up top as he harassed the D.C. United defense. After helping put the Galaxy on level terms with an assist on Daniel Steres’ goal, Magee notched two goals and won a penalty in an electric second half.

If Magee can regain his form from 2013, the Galaxy’s already vaunted attack will have another weapon in its arsenal.

DANIEL STERES’ STRONG DEBUT

Daniel Steres enjoyed an MLS debut that he won’t soon forget

In his first league appearance, Steres found the back of the net with a dramatic 54th minute equalizer that sparked the Galaxy’s rally and snapped a goalless streak of 387 minutes. The two-time LA Galaxy II defender of the year was equally capable in defense as he helped stymie the United attack after an early flourish.

With regular starter Jelle Van Damme still nursing an injury, Steres could be in line for more minutes next week when the Galaxy take on the Colorado Rapids next week.

BRIAN ROWE SHOWS HIS CALIBER IN INJURY DUTY

Brian Rowe barely had a chance to get warmed up when he was inserted for the injured Dan Kennedy in the 19th minute, but the backup goalkeeper shined, making five saves in the LA Galaxy’s win.

After Kennedy was forced off the field with a leg injury, Rowe stepped in goal and provided the Galaxy the cover needed to get back into the game. When called upon, Rowe was up to the task as he made five stops including a save on Luciano Acosta in the 43rd minute that kept D.C.’s lead at one goal.

With the Galaxy ahead 2-1 midway through the second half, Rowe again came through in the clutch when he made three stops between the 71st and 78th minute that allowed LA to keep their advantage.
