On this day in 2002: Robbie Keane scored this famous last-minute goal in the World Cup

“Look at these scenes! Look at these scenes!”

On June 5, 2002, LA Galaxy captain Robbie Keane scored one of his most memorable goals for the Republic of Ireland in the final World Cup Group E match against Germany in Kashima Stadium, Ibaraki.

Down 2-1 late in the match, the Irish needed to avoid defeat to guarantee passage into the knockout round. As the match entered stoppage time and Ireland pressing for a late equalizer, Niall Quinn headed a long ball perfectly into the path of the onrushing Keane.

Keane took a brilliant first touch and narrowly slid the ball under German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn for the vital equalizing goal.

Galaxy fans will recognize both Keane’s trademark finishing ability and legendary celebration.
