How the USMNT can qualify for the Copa America Centenario quarterfinals | INSIDER

The United States face a do-or-die moment on Saturday when they face Paraguay in their final group stage match of the Copa America Centenario.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad kept their hopes of a berth in the knockout round alive on Tuesday when they trounced Costa Rica 4-0 in Chicago. They’ll now turn their attention to a match against Paraguay on Saturday (4 PM PT, FS1/Univision/UDN) with an eye toward a place in the quarterfinals.

The complete list of scenarios is below:

USMNT DEFEAT PARAGUAY

A win and the U.S. are through to the quarterfinals with six points from group play. If Costa Rica beats Colombia in the other group stage match, the USMNT will win Group A and head to Seattle for the quarterfinals. If Colombia wins or draws, the U.S. finish second and head to East Rutherford, N.J.

USMNT DRAW PARAGUAY

This scenario gets a little murky for the Americans:

  • If Colombia knocks off Costa Rica, then the USMNT advances as the second-place team in the group.
  • If Costa Rica and Colombia draw, the USMNT advances to the quarterfinals, finishing second in Group A.
  • If Costa Rica defeats Colombia, the USMNT will advance unless the Central Americans win by 6+ goals. Costa Rica could also advance if they outscore the Americans by more than six goals.

USMNT LOSE TO PARAGUAY

If the USMNT lose on Saturday, they’ll be eliminated from the Copa America Centenario.
