LA Galaxy partner with Habitat for Humanity and Mission Continues to build houses for veterans

The LA Galaxy Foundation partnered with Habitat for Humanity and Mission Continues for a day of service in Montebello, Calif.

In continuation of the LA Galaxy Foundation Fridays’ community initiative, the LA Galaxy volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Community Build Day on May 27th in Montebello, Calif. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles staff trained volunteers to saw, align, and nail the wooden infrastructure of a home that will belong to a veteran upon its completion. In honor of Memorial Day, the LA Galaxy worked alongside veteran volunteers of Mission Continues for the day of service. LA Galaxy staff and fans joined by LA Galaxy Academy player, Christian Gomez, and Galaxy II players, Nathan Smith and Josh Turnley, were among the 30 participating volunteers. During the event, Habitat for Humanity executives introduced a mother of three who shared her story of how Habitat for Humanity LA strengthened her family and financial stability.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, a non-profit organization that improves long-term financial security by providing affordable homes for families in need, partnered  with the LA Galaxy for its second annual Community Build Day. The LA Galaxy Foundation will host Habitat for Humanity as their Community Partner of the Match on Sunday, August 7th. Mission Continues, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping veterans transition to life at home through community impact, will also be recognized as the Community Partner of the Match on Sunday, September 11th.

The Foundation Fridays initiative follows the LA Galaxy’s 20 for Twenty, a year-long community outreach program that saw the implementation of over 100 community service projects to celebrate the club’s 20th season in MLS. Thus far, Foundation Fridays’ volunteers have participated in a Hawthorne Park Paint Day, an American Red Cross Blood Drive, a Vietnam Veteran Luncheon at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital and a Tree Caring Event in Inglewood as a part of the LA Galaxy Protect the Pitch sustainability program. Future events to include a Heal the Bay Beach Clean-up, Meal of Love with Ronald McDonald Los Angeles House and Relay for Life in Carson.
