CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, June 16, 2016) – The LA Galaxy will travel to face Portland Timbers FC at Providence Park in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. PT, U.S. Soccer announced today.
The LA Galaxy earned a 4-1 win over La Máquina at StubHub Center Tuesday night in the fourth round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to advance in the tournament.
The winner of the Round of 16 match between Portland and the LA Galaxy will play host to the winner of Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC match in the quarterfinals of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup.
The Galaxy have recorded a 28-15-1 all-time record in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They have entered the Open Cup every year since 1999, winning the tournament in 2001 and 2005 while reaching the Open Cup Final on two other occasions. Last year, the Galaxy fell to Real Salt Lake in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a Champion for over 100 consecutive years dating from 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
