LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016) – LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane has been named to the roster to represent the Republic of Ireland in a friendly match against Oman on Aug. 31 at Aviva Stadium in Ireland. The match will mark the final time that Robbie Keane, Ireland’s all-time leader in goals and appearances, will represent his country in his historic international career.
Keane, 36, is Ireland’s captain and leader for the most goals and appearances all time for his country. He has scored a record 67 goals in 115 appearances over the span of 18 years. Keane is also currently the all-time leading goal scorer among any active international player in the world. He is the 15th leading goal scorer in international history.
The Galaxy forward made his international debut for Ireland in 1998 at the age of 17 when they faced Czech Republic. Later that year, he scored his first international goal. Over the course of his international career, Keane has appeared in the 2002 World Cup, and Euro 2012 and 2016 in addition to scoring in 15 consecutive years for Ireland. He most recently represented Ireland during the team’s run to the Round of 16 in EURO 2016.
For the Galaxy, Keane has been arguably the best Designated Player signing in Major League Soccer history. All time, he has made 121 appearances, recording 80 goals, 45 assists, 23 game winning goals, 16 game-winning assists and 19 multi-goal games. In MLS Cup Playoffs, he has notched an additional nine goals and six assists, scoring in two MLS Cup victories including the game-winning goal in the 2014 MLS Cup Final. Recently, he reach 100 goals in all competitions, the fastest that any MLS player has reached that milestone.
