Gyasi Zardes completes his pledge to his family by graduating from Cal State Dominguez Hills | INSIDER

CARSON, Calif. – When Gyasi Zardes left college to sign with the LA Galaxy, he made a pledge to his family to one day complete his college degree. Just a few short years later, Zardes finished his pact by graduating from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Galaxy striker graduated from CSU Dominguez Hills on Friday with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, completing an educational journey which began back in 2009 at Cal State Bakersfield.  The Hawthorne native admitted after the ceremony that “words could not describe” his emotions, but he was immensely proud of his accomplishments and the example that he set for his children.

“When I left school to go pro early, I made a promise to my dad to finish college, but what motivates me today is my kids,” Zardes said.  “I have two kids, and they really look up to me, and I want to set a positive example for them.”

Added Gyasi’s wife Maddie, “The first step that he took on this field was to become a professional athlete and for him to get his degree on the field means so much more. He’s the best role model I could ask for my kids and every kid around here. I’m extremely proud that our kids were able to witness this.”

And to have it all happen on the field where Zardes has accumulated so many achievements for the Galaxy made it that much sweeter for the striker.

“This particular field holds so many memories and accomplishments that I have achieved in my life. It’s just great to have another one on this field.”
