Eric Lopez signed his first professional contract with LA Galaxy II on Nov. 3, 2014, becoming the youngest player to ever sign a contract in USL PRO. This season, on Aug. 20, 2016, the goalkeeper made his professional debut after starting goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon was injured early in Los Dos’ match against Orange County Blues FC.

Lopez talked with LAGalaxy.com about what that experience was like, his thoughts on the season and his expectations for the future.

How did you improve as a player this season?

“I think professionalism is something that I definitely developed a lot. Just things like being in the gym and taking care of my body and all that stuff. I think really a lot of what improved was my professionalism as a player, coming out and not taking any training for granted and always coming out with the right mentality. I think working with Daniel Gonzalez [LA Galaxy II Goalkeeping Coach], I’ve improved in so many different types of game scenarios that I think will ultimately lead to my development into the next season.”

What was your favorite memory of the season?

“I think my best moment from the season was obviously playing in the game against OC Blues. It was obviously unfortunate for Bennet [Sneddon] and you don’t want injury to happen to anyone. But getting into a game with LA Galaxy II was probably the best experience I’ve ever had. I got really excited and anxious when I was called upon to play. I don’t think at any moment I was afraid to go in. I think I was anxious in a really good way. I was pumped up and I was ready to go and I knew it was my chance. It was a happy feeling.”

What are some of your expectations for the 2017 season?

“For me, I’m going to do my best right now. I know how this game works. If you’re doing well the coach is going to give you an opportunity and right now, the expectation for myself is to continue working hard with the Academy during the offseason in terms of getting games in and being ready for that. And hopefully I earn a chance to play more games with Galaxy II. Obviously, I look to find myself a starting spot with this team. I’ll definitely get an opportunity I think; I’ve just got to make the most of it.”
