Match Report: LA Galaxy defeat Real Salt Lake in preseason scrimmage, 1-0

CARSON, Calif. – Jaime Villarreal scored the only goal of the afternoon as the LA Galaxy defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 in a closed-door scrimmage on the campus of StubHub Center.

Villarreal found the back of the net in the 40th minute to give Curt Onalfo’s squad their second victory of the preseason. The Galaxy are 2-1-1 during the 2017 preseason.

Romain Alessandrini made his first appearance for the Galaxy since being signed in late July. The French midfielder went 30 minutes in the victory.

Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo started a primarily reserve squad against Salt Lake, but primarily controlled the tempo to open the match. The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Jack McBean found Ema Boateng along the left side who sent in a ball to Villarreal for the finish along the back post.

Onalfo brought on his starting contingent in the 60th minute including Alessandrini. The French midfielder was active during his brief cameo and nearly contributed to a goal in the 79th minute when he dished a pass to Jermaine Jones who nearly found Ari Lassiter in the penalty area.

The Galaxy end the preseason on Saturday when they host the Portland Timbers at StubHub Center. The match will kick off at 8 pm PT and will be televised on Spectrum SportsNet. Fans can buy tickets now here.
