From Super Bowl LII to college soccer: A surreal week for LA Galaxy Girls' Academy's Colby Wilson

CARSON, Calif. – It’s been a whirlwind few days for the Wilson family.

On Sunday, Chris Wilson, the father of LA Galaxy Girls’ Academy player Colby Wilson and defensive line coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, helped coach his team to a victory in Super Bowl LII. Just days later, the Wilson family celebrated another achievement as Colby signed her letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington University.

As remarkable as it was defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to win the NFL’s grandest prize, Wilson acknowledged that it paled in comparison to watching his daughter sign her letter of intent to play college soccer.

“You can’t script a week like this. This is something that happens, and you just go with the flow. You have to enjoy all of it," Wilson told LA Galaxy Insider. "How often do you get to win a world championship in the National Football League and then watch the investment that your children have put in? She's now able to have her crowning glory to play college soccer. I’m excited.”

Still basking in the afterglow of the Super Bowl victory, Wilson left Philadelphia on Monday bound for California so that he and his wife, Tina, could be present for Colby’s signing day ceremony. The defender for the U-18/19 team was among seven Galaxy Girls’ Academy players to sign letters of intent to attend universities in the fall.

For Wilson, the signing was the culmination of years of hard work that Colby put in, making it especially important that he be there for his daughter's special moment.

“One of the things that we talk about in Philadelphia with [owner] Mr. [Jeffrey] Lurie and [Eagles head coach] Doug [Pederson] is family," Wilson said. "Our players are doing exit interviews, and there are no more games this year, so the timing was perfect.”

“It’s an unreal feeling,” Colby added. “I’m pretty proud of my dad. Now I’m signing, so I know that all of his hard work has paid off for me. I’m glad to do this for my family.”

As they move forward onto bigger and better things, Colby says that the excitement of the magical week will remain with her as she begins her collegiate career.

“We’ve dreamed of times like this, and now they're finally happening. We’re blessed," Colby said. "My dad's taught me my whole life. Now I’m able to go do things on my own, and use everything that he’s taught me.”
