LA Galaxy Goal of the Month competition presented by 76 Gas | JULY
Tallies by Giovani dos Santos, Jelle Van Damme, Ashley Cole, Academy star Efrain Alvarez, and Galaxy II striker Justin Dhillon have been nominated for the monthly honor.
The winner will join Dos Santos, Alvarez, fellow Academy star Jonathan Estrada, and Dave Romney as past winners of the competition.
The five nominees are below:
GIOVANI DOS SANTOS vs. Manchester United
Manchester United received a firsthand look at why the Giovani dos Santos and Romain Alessandrini combination is one of the most lethal in Major League Soccer. In the friendly between the two squads on July 15, Alessandrini found dos Santos in the penalty area. With the ball at his feet, Giovani dribbled past a defender and lashed a shot into the back of the net for his first of two goals on the evening.
ASHLEY COLE vs. Real Salt Lake
Ashley Cole opened his 2017 account in brilliant fashion with a stunning finish in the Galaxy’s July 4 contest against Real Salt Lake. Jose Villarreal supplied the service with a looping pass over the Salt Lake defense to set up the Englishman who beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando with a clever finish.
EFRAIN ALVAREZ vs. Seattle Sounders FC U-18’s
Efrain Alvarez was the breakout star of the LA Galaxy U-18’s run to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy championship match. He proved to be the hero against Seattle Sounders when he sent in a well-placed finish that helped the Galaxy U-18’s erase an early deficit and reach the championship game.
JELLE VAN DAMME vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Jelle Van Damme scored his long-awaited first goal for the LA Galaxy during the Galaxy’s annual California Clásico clash with the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium. The goal came off a Jose Villarreal free kick that Van Damme calmly belted into the back of the net for his first tally in a Galaxy uniform.
JUSTIN DHILLON vs. Tulsa Roughnecks
Justin Dhillon is enjoying a banner season for LA Galaxy II and he scored his team-leading sixth goal in sublime fashion against the Tulsa Roughnecks. In the 24th minute of Los Dos’ 2-2 draw with Tulsa, Dhillon created something out of nothing when he shook off a defender and then chipped the goalkeeper from beyond the penalty area to find the back of the net.
