LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and midfielder Jonathan dos Santos named to Mexico roster for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers

Mexican National Team Head Coach Juan Carlos Osorio has named LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and midfielder Jonathan dos Santos to Mexico’s roster for their two upcoming World Cup Qualifier matches, the Mexican Football Federation announced today. The Dos Santos brothers will join the Mexican National Team after LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, Aug. 27 at StubHub Center (4 p.m. PT, Fox Sports 1, Fox Deportes).

Giovani dos Santos has played in three of six FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualifiers, with his most recent appearance coming in a 3-0 win against Honduras on June 8 at Estadio Azteca. Most recently, Giovani dos Santos featured for the Mexican National Team three matches at the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017. He has recorded 99 international caps since debuting for Mexico in 2007.

Jonathan dos Santos has made four appearances in Mexico’s FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign, last starting in Mexico’s 1-1 draw with USA at Estadio Azteca on June 11. Jonathan dos Santos played another four matches in the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 that followed. All-time Jonathan dos Santos has recorded 29 international caps. The midfielder made his debut for Mexico in 2009 at the age of 19.

This call-up marks the first for Jonathan dos Santos while with LA Galaxy, after officially signing with the club on July 27. He has made two appearances for the Galaxy since that date.

As it stands, Mexico lead the CONCACAF group with 14 points, three points clear of Costa Rica. The pair of World Cup Qualifiers kicks off for Mexico when they take on Panama at the Azteca on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m. PT. They’ll then travel to face Costa Rica at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica at 7 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
