Forward Giovani dos Santos and Midfielder Jonathan dos Santos named to Mexico roster for final pair of World Cup Qualifiers

Mexican National Team Head Coach Juan Carlos Osorio has named LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and midfielder Jonathan dos Santos to Mexico’s roster for their final pair of World Cup Qualifier matches against Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras, the Mexican Football Federation announced today. The dos Santos brothers will join the Mexican National Team after LA Galaxy vs. Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Sept. 30 at StubHub Center (7:30 p.m. PT, Spectrum Community).

Giovani dos Santos has played in four of eight qualifiers in the CONCACAF Hexagonal, with his most recent appearance coming in a 1-1 draw away to Costa Rica on Sept. 5. He forced an own goal in the game for his team’s only score. The match marked his 100th appearance for the Mexican National Team.

Jonathan dos Santos has made five appearances in Mexico’s Hex campaign, as he also started in the team’s most recent fixture against Costa Rica. That game marked the 30th Mexican National Team appearance for the younger dos Santos. The midfielder made his debut for Mexico in 2009 at the age of 19.

This call-up marks the second for Jonathan dos Santos while with LA Galaxy, after officially signing with the club on July 27. Since then, he’s started eight matches for the Galaxy. Giovani dos Santos has made 22 starts for the Galaxy this season, recording six goals and two assists along the way.

With two games left in the final round of World Cup Qualifying, Mexico leads the table of Costa Rica, Panama, USA, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago with 18 points in eight games. They qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ after defeating Panama 3-0 in Mexico City on Sept. 1.
