CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo has high aspirations for his first year at the helm of the team and new midfield addition Jermaine Jones is “right smack in the middle of them” according to the club’s new boss.
The Galaxy officially announced the 35-year-old U.S. international a week ago to serve as one of the lynchpins of the team’s new-look midfield pairing. A week later, Onalfo’s squad bolstered the midfield further with the addition of Portuguese defensive midfielder Joao Pedro.
Jones is currently with the U.S. National Team for friendlies against Serbia and Jamaica over the next week and will officially join the Galaxy for preseason training in early February. Once he arrives, Onalfo expects his new midfield general to play a significant role in his emerging squad.
“Jermaine is an outstanding addition to our team. He immediately makes us better. He’s got experience, his physical presence in the middle of the field, and the thing that is undervalued in his game is his passing ability,” Onalfo told LA Galaxy Insider. “The information that he gives his teammates is invaluable, and the thing that I like most about Jermaine is that he may be 35 years old, but he takes such good care of his body in terms that he’s a vegan and he’s lean. He’s always been a fit player.
“He has something to prove and hunger to win a championship, that’s what his coach has and what our organization has. He wants to win, and he has the character to help us do that.”
