On this day in 2002: Bruce Arena led the USMNT to a famous victory over Portugal in the World Cup

Where were you when the US defeated Portugal in the 2002 World Cup?


On June 5, 2002, the USMNT recorded one of their most famous World Cup victories, when they defeated Portugal 3-2 at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.


Goals from John O’Brien(!), Brian McBride and and own goal from Jorge Costa propelled the Yanks to victory and a second-place finish in Group D.


That United States team, coached by current LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena, also featured former Galaxy players Frankie Hejduk, Pablo Mastroeni, DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan, Tony Sanneh and Cobi Jones. Former Galaxy players Gregg Berhalter, Eddie Lewis and Clint Mathis were unused subsitutes.
