Abel Xavier, one of the most colorful characters in LA Galaxy history, was appointed head coach of the African nation of Mozambique on Monday afternoon.

The 43-year-old former Portuguese international has spent the last three years coaching in the lower leagues of Portugal, before being announced as the new head coach of his birth nation. Xavier spent nearly two seasons with the LA Galaxy from May 2007 to July 2008, making 20 appearances for the club. Before joining the Galaxy, Xavier enjoyed a 17-year career in Europe that included stops at various clubs across Europe including, Everton, PSV, and Liverpool.

"I am very proud to return to my country," Xavier told reporters about his newest position.

Xavier will be tasked with leading the Mambas in their bid to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations, a tournament that they have not reached since 2010. At present, Mozambique is sitting in last place in qualifying Group D with two straight defeats. Xavier will coach his first African Cup of Nations qualifying match in March against Ghana.
