LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop has been named to the Senegal National Team roster for an upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier match. Diop and Senegal will face Cape Verde this Saturday, Oct. 7 at National Stadium on the road in Praia.
After earning his first-ever international call-up in late May 2017, Diop made his international debut in the team’s scoreless draw against Uganda on June 5, playing 45 minutes in the friendly. The goalkeeper will return from international duty and be available for the Galaxy’s next match on Sunday, Oct. 15 against Minnesota United at StubHub Center.
Continuing in Round 3 of World Cup qualification, Senegal is one of 20 teams split into five groups. The winners of each group will qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. Senegal’s group consists of Burkina Faso, South Africa and Cape Verde Islands, Senegal sit third with five points from three games played, just one behind Berkina Faso and Cape Verde Islands, who each have six points.
Diop, 23, joined LA Galaxy II in 2015 before signing an MLS contract with LA Galaxy at the end of that season. During his time with the club, Diop has been a standout goalkeeper in the USL in addition to making 13 starts for the LA Galaxy, including ten this season, while making 56 saves in MLS play.
