Thursday’s LA Galaxy match against Central FC at StubHub Center marks the beginning of the group stages of the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League. LA advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2013-14 edition of the tournament and was semifinalist in the 2012-13 Champions League. Bruce Arena’s squad qualified for this installment of the tournament by winning the 2014 MLS Cup last December. This is the fifth time in which LA have qualified for the Champions League, debuting in the 2010-11 edition of the tournament. In 14 all-time group stage games, the Galaxy are 10-3-1, including a perfect 7-0-0 at home.
Heading into Sunday’s match against Seattle Sounders FC, the Galaxy are 7-4-5 all-time against their Western Conference counterpart, scoring 22 goals in the 16 games played head to head during the regular season. In their last meeting earlier this year, Alan Gordon scored the game winner in a 1-0 victory at StubHub Center on April 12 over the 2014 MLS Supporters Shield winners. Sunday marks the second of three total head-to-head matches against Seattle this season, with the final contest coming on Oct. 4 at CenturyLink Field.
The LA Galaxy have scored 39 goals on the season, the most of any team this year, with a +10 goal differential, the best in Major League Soccer. This season at StubHub Center, the Galaxy have gone 9-1-2, scoring 29 goals and allowing just seven. The team has gone 4-0-0 in their previous four matches at home, scoring 19 goals and allowing just three. The 19 goals scored over the last four-consecutive home matches ties a franchise record, as the team last achieved such the same feat during the 1998 season.
Mexican forward Giovani dos Santos will be available for selection for the first time as a member of the Galaxy on Thursday against Central FC in addition to Sunday against Seattle Sounders FC. The Galaxy announced the signing of the Designated Player in July.
