LA Galaxy Insider Year In Review: Mike Magee

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy’s 2016 was a tumultuous one filled with brilliant goals and frustrating moments for Bruce Arena’s men, ultimately ending in a penalty kick shootout defeat in the Western Conference Semifinals.

As we look back on 2016, LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano will provide a review on each position. The LA Galaxy Insider Year in Review will begin with goalkeepers and then move up the field to defenders, midfielders and forwards. Several select players will also have their own review, based on the number of appearances made.

HIGHLIGHTS:

The 2016 season wasn’t all that Mike Magee expected that it would be, but he remained an important contributor at times for the Galaxy.

Signed in the offseason as a member of the league’s inaugural free agent class, Magee was a regular member of Bruce Arena’s rotation. The 32-year-old led all forwards with 38 appearances on the season which were second to only Baggio Husidic for total games played by a Galaxy player last season and set a career-high for the striker.

Magee found the back of the net six times in regular season, tying Gyasi Zardes for the third-highest goal total for a Galaxy player in 2016. In addition to his six goals, Magee also added another goal during the club’s run to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

His best performance came in the club’s season opener when he notched two goals and one assist in the Galaxy’s 4-1 victory over D.C. United back in March.

LOWLIGHTS:

Mike Magee was a constant presence in the Galaxy’s rotation, but his production was not up to his lofty standards.

Despite appearing in 30 games across all competitions, Magee finished with six goals which equalized the third-highest total of his career. The majority of Magee’s production occurred at the start of the season as he scored five of his six goals in the opening two months of the campaign.

As the season wore on, Magee saw his role with the team fluctuate from regular start to depth player to occasionally out of the game day roster altogether. A nagging injury limited Magee’s down the stretch limiting the veteran forward to just two appearances in the club’s final six regular season games.

Magee’s final start of the season came in the Galaxy’s postseason defeat to the Colorado Rapids in the second leg of the Western Conference semifinal. Brought on to replace the injured Ema Boateng on the right flank, Magee and the rest of the Galaxy attack struggled to create offense against the suffocating Colorado defense.

OVERVIEW

Where Mike Magee’s career goes from here remains up in the air.

Magee enjoyed a productive season with 30 appearances and six goals, but his time with the Galaxy could come to an end this offseason with the veteran forward up for free agency.

Regardless of where Magee ends up, whether it be with another team, the Galaxy or somewhere else, his status as a Galaxy legend has long been solidified.
