LA Galaxy select three players in MLS SuperDraft 2022 presented by adidas

LOS ANGELES (Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022) – The LA Galaxy today selected three players in MLS SuperDraft 2022, presented by adidas. The Galaxy selected forward Farai Mutatu from Michigan State University in the first round (No. 21 overall), midfielder Callum Johnson from Clemson University in the second round (No. 42 overall) and defender Chandler Vaughn from Saint Louis University in the third round (No. 60 overall). Additionally, the Galaxy passed on their 70th overall selection. 

Mutatu was selected by the Galaxy after making 67 appearances (44 starts) and tallying 13 goals and eight assists across a four-year career for the Spartans (2018-21). Mutatu was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after leading Michigan State with seven goals and adding three assists during the 2021 campaign. The forward registered two goals and two assists in 18 games played (17 starts) during his sophomore season in 2019. Born in Zimbabwe, Mutatu registered three goals and three assists in 2018 and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. 

In two seasons played at Clemson University (2020-21), prior to transferring from Boston College (2016-19), Johnson made 43 appearances (38 starts) and added eight goals and nine assists for the Tigers. During a standout 2021 campaign in which he gained an extra year of eligibility due to Covid-19, Johnson registered three goals and five assists en route to helping Clemson win the 2021 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship and the ACC Championship. In 2020, the New York Red Bulls Academy product logged five goals and four assists in 20 games played (19 starts) and helped the Tigers claim the 2020 ACC Championship. In three seasons at Boston College, the midfielder logged eight goals and seven assists in 52 games played (28 starts) in his career for the Eagles. 

Vaughn was selected by the Galaxy after logging two goals and four assists in 33 appearances (31 starts) in two seasons played at Saint Louis University (2020-21). In 2021, the defender notched one goal and two assists in 19 games played (17 starts) and helped the Billikens to an undefeated regular season, Atlantic 10 Conference regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance. The D.C. United Academy product transferred to Saint Louis University from the University of Pittsburgh (2018-19), where he registered two assists in 26 career games played (16 starts). In his freshman campaign in 2018, Vaughn was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team after registering two assists in 18 appearances (15 starts) for the Panthers.
