LA Galaxy Sign Free Agent Defender John Nelson

LOS ANGELES (Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023) The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has signed free agent defender John Nelson to a two-year contract through the end of the 2025 MLS season with a club option for 2026.

Nelson, 25, has tallied four assists in 71 career league matches played (46 starts) across five MLS seasons with FC Dallas (2019-21), FC Cincinnati (2022) and St. Louis CITY SC (2023). Last season, Nelson recorded one assist and logged a career-high 1,268 minutes of action in 17 league appearances (14 starts) with St. Louis CITY SC, helping the expansion side finish with the best regular season record in the Western Conference.

“John is an established defender with strong MLS experience for his age,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz. “He will add depth and a veteran presence to our back line and we look forward to bringing him into our group.”

The Medina, Ohio, native played the 2022 campaign with FC Cincinnati, logging two assists across 24 regular-season matches played (14 starts). After being selected by FC Dallas with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft from the University of North Carolina, Nelson went on to notch one assist in 30 career regular-season appearances (18 starts), including making two starts for FC Dallas in the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.
