LOS ANGELES (Thursday, May 25, 2023) – The LA Galaxy will travel to face Real Salt Lake in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at America First Field on Wednesday, June 7 (6:30 p.m. PT; Bleacher Report App and B/R Football YouTube).
The U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match between the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake marks the 56th all-time meeting across all competitions between the Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, with LA leading the all-time series 23-19-13. Against RSL, the Galaxy hold a 19-17-11 record in league play, a 4-1-2 record in the MLS Cup Playoffs and a 0-1-0 record in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In the last meeting between the two clubs, the Galaxy and Real Salt Lake played to a 1-1 draw at Dignity Health Sports Park on Oct. 1, 2022. In the only U.S. Open Cup meeting between LA and RSL, the Galaxy fell 1-0 on the road in the Quarterfinal Round on July 14, 2015.
The Galaxy advanced to the Quarterfinals of the competition following a 3-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC at Dignity Health Sports Park in the Round of 32 on May 10 and a 2-0 shutout win over LAFC at BMO Stadium on May 23. Riqui Puig and Tyler Boyd each recorded their first career U.S. Open Cup goals, while Jonathan Klinsmann recorded six saves and a shutout in the victory against LAFC. LA Galaxy Head Coach and Sporting Director Greg Vanney improved to 5-1-0 in six all-time U.S. Open Cup matches as manager of the LA Galaxy with the win over LAFC.
The Quarterfinal matchup between the Galaxy and Real Salt Lake marks LA’s 57th all-time U.S. Open Cup contest dating back to 1999, with the club holding a record of 37-18-1 in the competition. In 27 all-time road matches played in the U.S. Open Cup, the Galaxy hold a 12-14-1 record.
