LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016) – LA Galaxy midfielder Steven Gerrard and forward Robbie Keane defeated a team of 30 eight-year-old children by a score of 3-2 as part of the LA Galaxy Ridiculous Soccer Challenge – Driven by Chevrolet. In the thrilling 3-2 win, Keane and Gerrard lined up in a 0-1-1 formation with no goalkeeper against an attacking 9-10-10 lineup from the eight-year-olds. Gerrard and Keane combined to score all three goals for their side while conceding just two, despite fielding 28 less players than their opponents. Keane, Ireland’s all-time leading scorer and the Galaxy’s leading scorer against teams of 30 eight-year-olds, recorded a brace and Gerrard added another.
Between the pair of Galaxy players, Gerrard and Keane have over 200 appearances and nearly 100 goals internationally for England and The Republic of Ireland. Robbie Keane has notched 81 goals and 45 assists for LA during his time with the club, while Steven Gerrard is among MLS leaders in assists this year with 11. Their opponents have recorded several goals in their youth soccer leagues.
The group of 30 eight-year-olds finished the season 0-4-0, losing matches to Gerrard & Keane, Giovani dos Santos & Gyasi Zardes, Ashley Cole & Baggio Husidic and Jelle Van Damme & A.J. DeLaGarza. The four-consecutive wins mark the Galaxy’s first ever sweep in the LA Galaxy Ridiculous Soccer Challenge –Driven by Chevrolet. In addition to five MLS Cups, two MLS Supporters’ Shields and two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophies, the Galaxy are now champions of the LA Galaxy Ridiculous Soccer Challenge – Driven by Chevrolet.
In addition to earning victories over the team of 30 eight-year-olds, each Galaxy player got to know their opponent before they squared off during a ride along with Chevrolet, in which the children asked questions of their favorite soccer stars. Forward Robbie Keane was joined by his son, Robert, for the ride-along.
