Yes, it’s called soccer. The word derives from Association Football. Soccer, short for association, was used by the British. They’ve since reverted to “football.”

Below are some basics focuses on getting you through 90 minutes of a game:

  • Half - 45 minutes long; two make up the full match (first half, halftime, second half)
  • Stoppage time (added time) - time added for delays during the original 45 minutes of the half.
  • Cross - pass that is played from the wide areas into the goal area.
  • Clearance - kicking the ball away from danger.
  • Corner Kick - ball goes out of play off the defending team at the endline and results in the attacking team getting a kick from the corner of the field to resume play.
  • Throw-In - ball goes out of play along the sidelines, resulting in the attacking team performing a throw in where the ball is thrown from over their head.
  • Foul - illegal contact or action.
  • Free Kick - restart of play after a foul by kicking the ball at the spot of the offense unless inside of the penalty area, which would result in a penalty kick.
  • Direct Free Kick - can score directly without ball touching another player.
  • Indirect Free Kick - has to touch another player before goal. These are a result of offside, if the goalkeeper picks up an intentional pass from a teammate, if the goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than six seconds, or in other rare instances.
  • Penalty - shot on goal from the penalty spot (12 yards away) with only the goalkeeper.
  • Handball – foul in which the arm is used illegally to touch the ball while in play.
  • Offside – foul in which the attacking forward is too far ahead from the last defender.
  • Yellow Card - first serious foul/warning.
  • Red Card – more serious foul, can result from a player’s first infraction or automatically from a second yellow card, resulting in an ejection from the game.
